about the importance of the support from the family for LGBTQIA+ children
“We are both suppressed from society out there for being people of the LGBTQIA+ community and people with disabilities. But our family are so supportive, they accept without forcing us to come out or trying to turn us to be straight.”
This is the conversation between ‘Poocao - PITPASUPAT WONGUMPAI’ and ‘Bunrod - BUNROD AREEWONG.’ Besties from Poocao Channel are coming to share with us about their life in the role of LGBTQIA+ and people with disabilities in Thai society and how important it is for the society to understand the diversity and equality in Thailand.
“Talking about my body, there were some struggles when I was younger. I couldn’t find the right school to enroll in because of my disability. I found about 3-4 schools, but I couldn’t get in because they told us that it was hard to take care of me, I just don’t understand.”
Bunrod was learning his gender identity during his high school because he met LGBTQIA+ friends back then. His friends and family helped him study. On the day his mother found out about his gender identity, which did not fit in the social norm, she still supported Bunrod no matter what.
“I think I had the courage to express my femininity. I had the courage to wear makeup or wear a pink watch to school. My family did notice that, but I didn’t care at all. I think it is not something to hide, and my parents didn’t ask until this day.”
On Poocao side, he felt like an outcast when he was a child. Because he’s a boy, but his gender expression is feminine. He always shows his femininity to his family, and they accept and support Poocao, so he grows to be who he is today.
“I’ve seen lots of news. Parents abandon their children because of their disabilities. It’s so sad. Like my parents, they didn’t want me to have disabilities, but here I am. People can’t choose what they want to be born with, but I think parents should give them encouragement to live with other people in society with happiness and be able to help themselves.” - Bunrod
“For me, I think parents should be ready to love and support their children. Support on how they live their life to become the person they want to be and let them learn every moment of their life with their parents’ support. I think this is what it should be.” - Poocao
Poocao and Bunrod told us about “conditions” that parents lead their children. Whether they are LGBTQIA+ or people with disabilities. They think parents should not set any conditions with their children because at the end of the day, they are humans, and humans are so diverse and different. Support and encouragement from family is one of the most important things to make them become the person they want to be with confidence.
Even though support from family and friends is one of the most important things for LGBTQIA+ and people with disabilities. But we can’t deny that legal rights are also one thing that helps build an equal environment in society.
“Not having equal marriage is a symbol that LGBTQIA+ are not equal with others in society. It’s our pain. Because it’s not happening, some people still believe that inequality is normal in our society. Because state doesn’t treat us like others, the discrimination still exists.” - Poocao
We can't deny that equal marriage is another law that underscores that LGBTQIA+ lives as married couples are guaranteed to live together, manage property care, or have a right to access medical treatment. For now, where there is no equal marriage yet, health insurance "PRURokrai Super Koom" is another interesting option. It covers 63 serious diseases, such as organ replacement surgery, myocardial disease, heart valve surgery, hepatitis, Parkinson's, coma, hearing and speech impairment, severe burns, etc.

“I think it is important for us to have insurance. At least in days when the law can’t help us, insurance is one of the options for LGBTQIA+. Some people may not think about this, but this is an interesting choice.” - said Bunrod, before they closed their conversation.
